March 1st, 2013, 4:08 pm · 27 Comments · posted by

Hard to believe, but it’s already time for us to start thinking about our Athlete of the Year and All Area picks for winter sports. With the exception of wrestling and the University Prep girls soccer team in the CIF SoCal Regional tournament, all other winter sports teams are done for the season.

As always, we’d like to get your opinion on who you think deserves to be an AOY or on the All-Area team. So let us know your picks in the comments.

Here’s the categories:

Boys Basketball

Girls Basketball

Boys Soccer

Girls Soccer

Wrestling

  • nathand says:

girls soccer-Michelle Alozie. 40+ goals in a season is impressive

  • Old dude says:

How can you say Alozie get POY she played in the a very weak league and her coach never played 2nd string player after being up by 3 goals.
Gleason played in a tougher league and was better in non-league games.G.H. was only 3-5 in non league Serrano 6-2 .

  • GHSoccer21 says:

Ryan Pinkerton for Granite has to win AOY for soccer three straight seasons with at least 20 goals and he tied the all time granite scoring record with 26 goals he deserves this hands down

  • Akina Warren says:

I am curious to know what is considered when selecting Athlete of the year. Do you select according to the School winning Division record this year or how far did they place in CIF and the athlete’s performance doing that time? The reason behind my questioning is that Silverado Boys Basketball team made it to Quarter finals this year. And they beat a #7 ranked team in the state on their home court. And they have some tremendous athletes that have outstanding athletic ability. They also went undefeated in their league. They also played other schools within the High Desert and beat them. With all of that being said.
Boys basketball: Mateo Jones ( he is also a student athlete who has received scholarship offers for his academics as well as athletics)
    Girls Basketball: Ebony Smith

  • Akina,

We try to weigh everything together. We think about what we saw during the season, take a long look at stats and talk to the coaches before coming to a decision.

The fact that Silverado plays such a tough schedule, in a tough division and did very well in the playoffs is certainly something we’ll think about.

Jack your one RUDE-DUDE.But i think your telling the truth.Sorry to see your comment gone.

  • Jack Tatum says:

Sad that you speak the truth and they want to delete your post!!! Im pointing out the truth. I have seen her play many times and it was always the same. The kid has a lot of talent. Hope the attitude gets fixed

  • WOW says:

D.P. – why did you remove the comment about Granite Hills’ soccer coach, Bradbury, not removing Alozie from the field in order to score 5 goals a game to obtain school record? Isn’t it the truth? You guys are more than ridiculous and your article and headline and picture honoring such disgusting sportsmanship earlier in the year when she did obtain record, was embarrassing. Gleason is the All-Area POY, hands down.

    Hi folks,

We appreciate the passion all of you have for local sports, but just a reminder, we’re not going to allow you to personally attack high school kids here. You can share your opinions about who deserves recognition as the best in the area without crossing that line.

    Thanks,

  • jgalian says:

    WOW,

I’m not sure which comment you’re referring to about Granite Hills soccer. It’s possible I missed something, but I don’t think we deleted anything like that.

  • Old dude says:

Wow, I think you hit it right on the head,if you look at the stats vs real team and stats that are over inflated to have to give it to Gleason hands down.if any could tell us how many goals each of them scored in non-league game help please,.lets get the fact out there.

  • Jack Tatum says:

Coach of the year boys basketball either Apple Valley or Oak Hills coach. Both teams far exceded their talent week in and week out. Both coaches instill good discipline. Congrats to both for a fine year.

  • sunny says:

Coach year from oak hills basketball, both team. Otto or Maikai as player of year. Coach of the year — aae girls. Boys player of the year — kid from silverado boys basketball Jones

  • nichole victoria says:

Boys Basketball: JT Roach- he averaged 20.5 points, 10.7 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game in 10 league games. He is consistent and looking at the stats an all around player.

  • Scgridironfn says:

    Boys B-Ball – J.T. Roach

  • WOW says:

According to MaxPreps, Gleason has 18 goals in non-league matches, along with 6 assists in non-league matches. (37 goals total and 11 assists total) The information is on MaxPreps and is up to date. Of course, Alozie’s numbers are not even available online due to the coach not inputting ANY information. Again…great sportsmanship.

  • WOW,

I’m not really sure what putting information online has to do with sportsmanship. Certainly, we like when coaches put up at least a roster and prefer as many stats as possible. But some coaches choose not to do so and have valid reasons for doing so. I don’t think it’s an issue of sportsmanship.

    Matthew Peters

  • Old dude says:

WOW,Great job finds stats on players.

  • Soccer13 says:

Coach-UP girls soccer coach Teresa candelario took a team with only 2 seniors to win CVL and make it to the CIF semifinals. They were also chose to play in CIF state regionals
Player-soccer-justice Borden freshman UP goal keeper

  • WOW says:

Thank you Matthew Peters, thank you. (Insert sarcasm and, notably, great appreciation for validating my feelings about your journalism and organization over at the D.P.)
Old dude – no problem; on Max Preps.

  • Mystery says:

it has to Be Gleason From Serrano (girls Soccer) more than 30 goals and 10 assists and she has verbally committed to Auburn and she still A JUNIOR.

  • Old dude says:

When will it all come out?

  • We’re shooting for the end of March. We’ll put up dates for each sport when we finalize things.

  • Old dude says:

How about a Baseball preview for the up coming season.
Questions how will VV do with the Bates Brothers gone?
How will Serrano do this season ?
And Oak Hills will they run the table?

  • Soccer love says:

Girls soccer:You are comparing two very good athletes that sit on the front line and score against TWO very weak leagues. Look beyond the goal scorers to the best athletes on the team. Isalei Tauaese led Serrano’s defense throughout the season and their goal keeper Janel Flores kept them in every game! Katie Saavedra played anywhere needed on the field for Granite and still scored 31 goals and 22 assists. Katie, too, is only a junior going to #7 ranked Div 1 SDSU! It shows complete lack of knowledge for someone to state Kellcie has it “hands down”. Unless of course…you dont know soccer:/
