Faceoff: Who’s had the best season so far?

January 7th, 2013, 11:42 pm · 6 Comments · posted by

We already have a significant chunk of the winter sports season under our belts. In the Mojave River League and Desert Sky League, teams are finishing up the first round of league play.

So we decided to ask who has had the best season individually?

C.J. Daft argued it is Sultana wrestler Corey Griego while Matthew Peters said it is Oak Hills girls basketball star Jannon Otto.

Who do you think has the best season so far? Any early AOY candidates you’ve seen out there?

Corey, hands down, recognized NATIONALLY!!!!!……….He placed at the toughest high school tournament in the nation, took 1st at the toughest tournament in the state of California (beating the number 9th ranked kid in the nation) which should move his ranking from 13th to atleast 8th or 9th, and he is only a junior. Scary to think what he will be like next year.

I wouldn’t say hands down for anyone? But you are a wrestling fan and you know that Corey is ranked Nationally. But you don’t probably know that Jannon was.

#1 Last year as a Freshman voted all MRL first team
#2 Voted All High Desert first team by the VV Daily Press
#3 Put on ESPN the Magazine’s All Underclass Second team, as voted on by ESPN. So she is obviously recognized Nationally, and while on that subject, how many kids does Corey have to compete against compared to Jannon? I mean how many people wrestle nationally as compared to how many people play basketball?
#4 Invited to Nike Nationals and flown to Georgia, where at this point she has a scouting report by just about every DI school in the Nation.
#5 Plus she currently ranks #1 out of I think 578 students in her class.
#6 How would Sultana’s wrestling team fare without Corey, I know they would still be one of the best up there, but on the flip side how would Oak Hills fare without Jannon?

Now I too follow wrestling very very very closely, you know that Ryan, and I am partial to great great wrestlers. But when comparing athletes from all different sports nothing should ever be considered “hands down.” There is probably some soccer player up there that probably deserves mention also? I don’t follow soccer that closely, and 20 goals when compared to other sports doesn’t seem like a lot, but I am sure soccer guru’s across the nation would take notice if someone were to score say between 20 and 30 goals. Trust me when I say that Jannon has drawn National attention, she drew it as a freshman, and to think she is only a sophomore, scary to think what she will be like as a junior?

Good luck to your boy this year in college, hope he gets a national title, and hope to see you around at the tournaments as the year winds down.

Sorry Kevin, and your 100 percent right about not knowing Jannon but my pick is still corey with out the hands down comment, lol. Im jus going off the title of the article, Who has had the best season so far and corey has been huge. Sorry, Im not a big basketball fan or soccer fan, I cant deal with the intentional flops and act like they are hurt…. someone does that in wrestling and they get put on their back. Anyways, I hope your still coaching, you got alot of passion for sports, and I will tell my son you are rooting for him this year and it sounds like jannon is an awesome talent.

  • Old dude says:

Who cares about girls basketball anyway. You ever watch the WNBA ? If you do you got a real problem Wrestling is better by far,and from what I hear all odf Ottos stats are paded.

  • Kevin Hennessy says:

Hey Old dude, you know what, I don’t watch the WNBA, however, I have yet to even see any kind of men’s pro wrestling leagues in the US; in places like Iran and Russia there are some but you probably wouldn’t know about those. Oh and if you have some sort of “real problem,” feel free to stop by “my” wrestling room any day of the week if you think you need to show me a thing or two. My name is right there, I don’t hide behind some chicken little screen name. Also, if you are going to pretend to know stuff, maybe people would believe it more if you could spell things right.

Hey Ryan, I am not in disagreement with you, Corey has been extremely huge this year, I was at the Doc B and watched him perform, he was solid!! Im still coaching at the same school. I was just defending Jannon a little, and you are right, every time she drives the lane girls are flopping all over the place, before she even touches them. I guess they have to try and slow her down somehow, since they can’t they need to get her into foul trouble so I suppose they gotta do what they gotta do. Sometimes I feel like pulling her aside and teaching her a blast double, then at least if she gets called for a foul it will be a good one. But I guess that is the wrestler in me. Anyway, keep us posted on the california wrestler on how Ryan is doing. See you around.
